Water smartly
Water in the morning or evening when it’s cooler, and aim directly at the base of plants. Avoid wetting leaves where possible. A soaker hose is ideal for delivering moisture straight to the roots.

Cut back tired perennials
Once flowering has finished, cut back perennials to help them recover from dry weather and conserve energy. It’ll also keep borders looking tidy and may encourage a fresh flush of foliage.

Trim lavender
After flowering, give lavender a light trim, cutting just above two pairs of leaves. This helps the plant stay neat and bushy for next year.

Sow for autumn and spring harvests
Now is a good time to sow winter lettuce, mustard greens and rocket – they’ll provide harvests well into autumn and again in early spring.

Deadhead Buddleia
Remove faded flowers to encourage further blooming into the autumn months. It’s a great way to support butterflies and other pollinators with late-season nectar.
