To make gardening easy it is far better to put most of the effort into preparing the site prior to planting.
Eradicate all the weeds by either digging over the soil and forking out the weeds by hand or using a method to destroy the weeds by covering the ground or a total weed killer such as roundup which becomes inactive once it is in contact with the soil
Apply plenty of organic material to the soil prior to planting and select your plants to give year-round interest without the need for regular maintenance. Mulch the ground well to reduce water loss and prevent further weed growth.
Space the plants out to fit eventual size to eliminate the need for re-planting and have a good planting plan before you start.
